July 4 2014 Oleh Pankevych: I call upon the French government to treat Russia as an aggressor

On 3rd July the delegation of the European Affairs Committee within the National Assembly of the Republic of France met the representatives of Vekhovna Rada Committee on European Integration. Oleh Pankevych, Deputy Head of Svoboda party and Deputy Head of European Integration Committee took part in the gathering.

The French parliamentarians expressed their respect to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and greeted Ukrainian side with the successful conduct of Presidential elections under extremely difficult conditions. They noted that they bow their head before Ukrainians that underwent hard times and assured that both French President François Hollande and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Laurent Fabius take all possible steps in order to influence Russian leadership's positions as far as Ukrainian issue is concerned.

The Ukrainian parliamentarians informed the French side that the Committee on European Integration unanimously resolved to ask the President of Ukraine to urgently send to the Parliament the Association Agreement for ratification. The sides also discussed political situation in Ukraine.

The members of National Assembly articulated their readiness to bring the information obtained during the meeting to the attention of the French Republic's leadership. They admitted that the EU can not boast having unanimous position vis-à-vis Ukraine. And this problem is difficult to resolve, in particular due to the absence of the Ukrainian ambassadors in many European capitals.

While having floor during the gathering, Oleh Pankevych expressed his gratitude to the French colleagues for their sincere interest to Ukraine. He noted that "Association Agreement can be considered as another step to strengthen Ukrainian independence. At the same time, we are concerned by the fact that representatives of the French political forces participated in the conduct of illegal Crimean referendum thereby demonstrating their support to the Russian aggression. The success of such political forces achieved at the European Parliament elections suggests that a significant part of the French society finds itself under the influence of Russian propaganda".

Besides, Oleh Pankevych emphasised that one can not be guided by certain economic interests of European countries to justify violations of fundamental human rights in Ukraine caused by the actions of the Russian aggressor. "Therefore we are calling upon the government of France to treat Russia as aggressor for the purposes of negotiations similar to those that recently took place in Berlin", - noted Mr Pankevych.

While responding to the questions on the needs of the Ukrainian militaries, Svoboda party member said: "I recently returned from Dnipropetrovsk where Ukrainian army employs the helicopters that did not see an overhaul since Ukrainian independence. We understand that our request to endow Ukraine with military weapons is too sensitive politically, however we hope for your help in getting the systems of individual protection - bullet-proof vests and helmets for militaries".
