August 4 2014 Oleh Pankevych: The aggressor should feel not only financial hunger, but also principal impossibility to modernise its army

Svoboda people deputies Oleh Pankevych and Taras Osaulenko registered draft Resolution "On appeal of Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to the National Assembly of the French Republic". Svoboda MPs call upon the French parliamentarians to block the transfer of Mistral-class amphibious assault ships to Russia as under the current circumstances this may boost the offensive potential of the Russian aggressor.

The appeal mentions numerous facts linked to the Russian aggression in Ukraine including that of the "Malaysia airlines" air tragedy on 17 July this year. It also presents a number of legal arguments that point at the breaches of EU legislation, UN General Assembly's Resolution on territorial integrity of Ukraine and the provisions of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreements by France in case the contract is implemented.

"The adoption of the third package of EU sanctions following Boeing MH17 tragedy demonstrates that the West at long last understood how serious are the threats posed by Putin regime to regional and global security, to safeguarding world peace" - noted Oleh Pankevych.

While commenting on the freezing of European countries' military cooperation with Russia, Oleh Pankevych remarked: "I welcome the suspension of the Russian-Italian small submarine construction project and the Russian-French project on construction of light armoured vehicles for the Russian militaries. I can not omit lauding the serious steps Germany took even beyond the agreed sanctions to recall the license from its arms manufacturing consortium Rheinmetall for construction of training facilities for the Russian army. We observe that the political discourse in Europe turns to the traditional foundation where human being, its life, peace and security as well as solidarity and not purely material calculations stand at the core.

In the light of such policies a recall by the French Government of the export license to the sale of Mistral would be a natural act of solidarity. We would like to call upon France to do it - in particular by addressing our French colleagues in National Assembly. The transfer of any weapons, especially strategic arms, to Putin's Russia is unacceptable! The aggressor should feel not only financial hunger, but also principal impossibility to modernise its army.

At the same time we understand the complementary economic complexities in France following this contract's cancellation. Thus I would like to call upon the Ukrainian diplomats to more actively assist in searching for alternative ways of Mistral-class warships sales to NATO member countries or other democratic states of the world".
