Biography of Oleh Pankevych

Oleh Pankevych was born on July 21, 1: 72 in Brody, Lviv region. After graduation from school, in 1988, he entered Brody Pedagogical College. During student years Mr Pankevych was an active participant in the social and political life of his land: he took part in rallies, restored the tombs of riflemen and soldiers of UPA together with friends. It is then, at the end of 80-s, that his nationalist world-view had been formed. In 1990, being 18 years old, Oleh Pankevych for the first time runs for Brody District Council elections. While a third year student at Brody Pedagogical College he became one of the leaders of the student hunger strike in support of Kyiv students.

Between 1995 and 1998 Mr Pankevych worked as a teacher of history in Brody district schools and also as a junior researcher with Brody Museum of History and Local Lore.

In 1992 he entered the restored historical faculty of Drohobych Ivan Franko State Pedagogical University, from which he graduated in 1997.

From 1998 to 2004 Oleh Pankevych worked as a director of Brody Museum of History and Local Lore. In parallel, he continued social and political activities. In 1998 he won the elections to Brody District Council and simultaneously became an assistant consultant of Oleh Tiahnybok, who won by a landslide the elections to Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in Brody electoral district.

In 2004 Mr Pankevych graduated from the law faculty of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv with a degree in jurisprudence.

In 2005 Oleh Pankevych was assigned to the position of the Chairman of Brody District Administration. In 2006 he was dismissed from that post due to his uncompromising stance and political views. The same year he became a deputy of Lviv Regional Council for the second time.

In 2010 Oleh Pankevych was elected a deputy of Lviv regional council in Brody election district #20. He becomes the Chairman of Lviv Regional Council, which he had been heading until November 2012. During his chairmanship of Lviv Regional Council Oleh Pankevych introduced principles of transparency and openness of the government, directed the activity of the Council on strengthening of the role of local self-government. Upon the initiative of the Regional Council a number of programs and measures were taken, particularly, 150 micro projects were provided to the communities of Lviv region, including for the repair and development of rural club-houses. Measures for maintenance of rural culture and sports, solutions to the environmental problems of settlements were initiated.

Municipal energy saving program took off in the region along with the programs on social protection of Chernobyl veterans and support of political prisoners. The annual award named after Stepan Bandera was started. Thanks to the position of the Lviv Regional Council the protracted construction project was virtually finished - a monument to the Hero of Ukraine Stepan Bandera in Lviv; the first part of the Museum of the national liberation struggle in Lviv was opened, the money for the establishment of memorials on the places of the death of UPA soldiers and other fighters for the independence of Ukraine was allocated. During 2012 more than a hundred of such monuments were set up. A memorial table to the head of OUN Eugene Konovalets in Kaunas (Lithuania) was mounted. In November 2012 Oleh Pankevych resigned from the post of the Chairman of Lviv Regional Council having been elected as a People's Deputy of Ukraine. He serves as a Vice-chairman of the parliamentary Committee for European Integration. Mr Pankevych founded the Subcommittee for Migrant Workers and National-cultural Cooperation. He is a member of the regular Ukrainian delegation at the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly. Being a Member of Parliament he is an authorized representative of "Svoboda" party in Kherson region.

Party career

Oleh Pankevych is a member of the Svoboda party from 1993. He was a Chairman of Brody district and Lviv regional party organization. Since 2006 Mr. Pankevych has been a Vice-chairman of All-Ukrainian Union "Svoboda". He is a political executive committee member, a member of the political council of the party.

He was responsible for the coordination of work with deputies of local councils of All-Ukrainian Union "Svoboda", and also - for the work with members of election commissions and observers during the parliamentary election process 2012. He is a Vice-chairman of All-Ukrainian Union "Svoboda" for the issues of national memory.

Married. Together with wife Natalia has a son Nazarij (born in 2002) and a daughter Dzvenyslava (born in 2006).
